Women in Sport Taskforce
Stage one for the taskforce charged with exploring barriers to female participation in sport and potential solutions canvassed the opinions of Doha GOALS conference delegates to define the top ten areas of concern.
After discussions among small groups, each responded to an iPad survey and identified 10 major topics, including religious constraints; lack of funding and of media attention; stereotyping; difficulties in balancing home life and time off for sport; lack of role models in leadership roles; lack of support for girls preventing growth of self-confidence; little access to females coaches/sport infrastructure; verbal and physical abuse from cultural bias and lack of national and international level.
Individual voting narrowed down these choices further, with the top three topics set for discussion tomorrow (Wednesday) being the fact that religion often determined cultural norms that discouraged women from participation in sport; lack of funding and the lack of media attention which thwarted the development of a fan base.
On the agenda will be a call for solutions and immediate action that conference participants can take away to develop further as a legacy of Doha GOALS.
